Cycling vs Walking the Camino

Many people have asked us how we found walking the Camino vs cycling it. In 2013 we cycled from St Jean Pied de Port to Finisterre. About 1000km along the Camino Frances.

This trip we walked 7 days on the Camino Nord (130km) and 6 days on the Camino Primitivo (120km) .

Conclusion – walking is harder!

Even though we cycled the actual Camino tracks on a mountain bike (vs cyling on the roads on a road bike) and we had to push some sections, it was overall easier on the body.

There are no exhilerating downhills or chance for free wheeling when you are walking.  With walking the weight is all borne by your feet and there is never any reprieve.

When cycling, its much easier to do a detour of a few kms to look at something historic, or take the longer more interesting route to the next village. In the evenings, walking around the village is much more attractive when you havent been walking all day.
