Market Day in Spain
Sunday is market day here. Don’t plan on going early. In true Spanish fashion the stalls only open at 10am. But it is worth the wait. Dozens of stalls selling locally grown produce. Some comprising only of an elderly women sitting with a few baskets of her home grown beans and freshly harvested tomatoes. The bread stalls are most impressive – some of the loafs are huge and rustic, and are sold by the half loaf. As can be seen in this photo:
So much cheese to choose from, including local varieties made in the surrounding hills
But my personal favourite, being vegetarian, was the bags of dried beans.
We see the bushells of beans and corn hanging out to dry under the eaves of the “horreos”. A visible reminder of the seasons. Evidence of communities that historically have been self-sufficient. Pity we dont see more of this, and less of the sprawling malls in our modern world.
At a little stall selling jewelry, I found a camino shell necklace. Sterling silver and well made. I spoilt myself. An appropriate souvinir of my time here in Grado. I wonder what path me and my new necklace will take in the years to come ….
